The founder of Valvano Insurance Agency (VIA), Dennis John Valvano Sr., left a legacy of hard work, stability and a commitment to the community that continues to be the main stay of the VIA today.
Dennis Sr. got his start very young shining shoes, delivering papers, and helping his dad with their Italian-American family-run store, the first of its kind in Linden, NJ. After a brief stint in the army at only 16, Dennis Sr. returned home for work until he met and married his wife Lucy. They had three sons, Dennis Jr., James, and Edward.
After several successful years managing chains for the James Butler Grocery Company, Dennis took a job for Public Service Electric and Gas Co. (PSE&G) reading meters and collecting bills. He found success there too, ranking as the top salesman in the entire region. While working for PSE&G, Dennis Sr. obtained his Real Estate and Insurance License. He then did work for a local Linden broker before starting his own agency in 1938 in the basement of his home. After several moves, the Agency settled in the office building where it still operates today at 16 West Elizabeth Avenue in Linden, New Jersey.
In addition to the insurance products and services offered, Dennis Sr. also operated the NJ Division of Motor Vehicles for 17 years, issuing licenses and registrations at this location.
At one point, all three of his sons worked for him. However, James was the son to remain in the family business. James J. Valvanos insurance exposure is vast. Not only did he learn by the succession of his fathers business, but he also had previous experience at the American Fore Loyalty Group (which later became Continental Insurance Companies) underwriting various forms of insurance.
Already a graduate of St. Vincent College, James later went on to further his education in the industry. He took night courses at Rutgers University for Insurance Education, and also in Boston, MA where he received his Insurance License and met his wife Marie, married and had three daughters.
James presently resides in Cape May Point & Neptune, NJ. As a consultant to the company, James still offers his experience and expertise when required.
Jamess Son-in-law, Michael Varvar, continues the family tradition with the same dedication and values that VIA has been known for in the community. His vision for the future and his commitment to his clients guarantees the continued success of VIA for many years to come.
